Learning and Loving People with Serene Labadi

Learning and Loving People with Serene Labadi

One of the most amazing parts of our journey with Kawami Jewelry has been the amazing friends we have made through our work. This is why we started Stories Worth Sharing in the first place; to uplift the people that inspire us the most. This month’s feature is one of our most inspiring yet- Serene Labadi, fellow North Central student and changemaker.

Serene is currently a senior at NCC studying Global Studies with a minor in Middle Eastern and North African Studies. She is currently a registered behavior technician, working with individuals with autism and a student research assistant at the college. Serene has plans post graduation to pursue a career in occupational therapy both teaching in the states and advocating for disability rights abroad.

Serene is a passionate advocate for people in all she does. From her work researching and pursuing disability rights and resources in Jordan, to fighting human rights for all people, to simply the way she engages with the world around her. When we spoke with Serene, the conversation centered on empathy and its importance in everything we do. Serene believes in the power of learning and listening from others’ stories, and finds herself inspired by those who find passion for what they do. Having a chance to learn more about Serene’s story, we find ourselves feeling that way about her- she is one of those people that you can have one conversation with, and walk away feeling energized and inspired. We are deeply honored to know and learn from Serene, she serves as an example of the type of person we want to be for others.

Our co-founder Maria Clara met Serene in a global studies class at North Central and was instantly drawn to her vibrant personality and deep care for people. The two bonded as friends over their shared passion for culture and global citizenship, meeting up for a cup of coffee and to learn more about their respective Colombian and Palestinian heritages. When the pandemic hit in the winter of 2020, Serene and Maria Clara continued to regularly chat, and over the summer when Maria Clara and Marco were out of the country spending time with their families, Serene managed Kawami’s store! We were immensely grateful for this act of generosity from Serene, and it only serves to demonstrate the selfless love she exudes in everything she does.

We could not be more honored to know Serene. She is a beautiful person inside and out and we could not be more grateful that she is a part of our story as a company.
