A College Project That Became a Purpose-Driven Brand
The story of Kawami Jewelry began with a trip that would change everything. While visiting Medellín, Colombia, in 2019, Maria Clara Ospina ('21) discovered the bright and bold handmade earrings that lined the markets. The vivid colors, intricate beadwork, and cultural stories woven into each design immediately captured her attention.
When Maria Clara returned to the United States, the earrings she wore drew endless compliments and questions. People wanted to know where they could find such vibrant and unique jewelry. That curiosity sparked an idea.
Turning Inspiration into Action
Maria Clara teamed up with Marco Antonio Dávila ('21), a fellow student at North Central College, to bring these Colombian creations to the U.S. Their shared vision was to introduce the artistry of Colombian earrings to the greater Chicago area while supporting the artisans who made them.
In May 2019, Kawami Jewelry was born—a socially conscious jewelry company dedicated to offering bold, handmade earrings while empowering the women who craft them. From the beginning, the mission has been clear: to connect people through design, culture, and purpose.
Staying True to Our Roots
Today, Kawami continues to work directly with Colombian artisans, ensuring fair wages, sustainable partnerships, and the preservation of traditional beadwork techniques. Every piece is handmade, lightweight, and designed to make a statement while telling a story.
What started as a spark of inspiration during a college trip has grown into a brand recognized for its handmade Colombian earrings, cultural authenticity, and community impact.
